BRIDGEPORT, CT (April 30th, 20206) — Kennedy, Johnson, Schwab & Roberge, P.C. has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit in the Superior Court in Bridgeport following the tragic and preventable death of Eleni Yiannakides. The lawsuit alleges that surgical errors led to a fatal injury during what was intended to be a corrective spinal procedure.
On January 23, 2025, Eleni Yiannakides arrived at St. Vincent’s Medical Center for a spinal surgery known as an L2-L5 lateral lumbar interbody fusion. The procedure was to be performed by Dr. Vijay Yanamadala. Like any patient undergoing an operation, Ms. Yiannakides placed her full trust in the expertise of her surgeon and the medical team, expecting they would uphold the highest standards of care to ensure her safety.
During the performance of the procedure, however, it is alleged that Dr. Yanamadala caused an injury to Ms. Yiannakides’ inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower and middle body to the heart. An injury of this magnitude to a major blood vessel is a catastrophic result and a surgical emergency. In this instance, the damage was so severe that it was not amenable to repair.
Despite the medical setting, the injury led to the untimely passing of Ms. Yiannakides on the very same day of her surgery. What was meant to be a step toward a more mobile and pain-free life ended in a tragedy that has left a family searching for answers and accountability.
“What should have been a routine procedure instead resulted in a fatal outcome. Her family is seeking answers and accountability. While no result can undo their loss, we are committed to working toward a resolution that honors her memory as a vibrant individual whose life was cut far too short.” – Firm Partner Michael Kennedy
The lawsuit asserts that the injuries, subsequent losses, and the ultimate death of Eleni Yiannakides were the direct result of the negligence and carelessness of Dr. Vijay Yanamadala. The complaint highlights that because of these failures, Ms. Yiannakides was deprived of the opportunity to carry on with her life. Her ability to participate in the lives of her loved ones and the activities she cherished has been permanently destroyed.
Medical malpractice cases involving surgical errors require a deep understanding of both the law and complex medical protocols. This filing represents the first step in seeking justice for Ms. Yiannakides and ensuring that medical professionals are held to the rigorous standards required when lives are in their hands.
