Connecticut Car Accident FAQs

What Specific Steps Should I Take Immediately After a Car Accident in Connecticut?

Ensure everyone’s safety, call 911, and seek immediate medical attention, even if your injuries appear minor. Exchange information, take photos or videos of the scene, gather witness names, and avoid apologizing or discussing fault, especially with insurance companies. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible and contact an attorney before speaking with the other driver’s insurer.

It depends on the severity of the injuries, the length of medical treatment, and the level of contested liability. Some claims settle within six months, while serious injury cases may take a year or longer. In many cases, you generally have two years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury lawsuit in Connecticut, so it’s important to get legal advice as soon as you can.

Useful evidence includes photos of the crash scene, vehicle damage, injuries, police reports, medical records, witness statements, and any available traffic or surveillance footage. Even if you don’t have all of this evidence readily available, don’t hesitate to reach out for legal help. Our attorneys can help preserve and collect additional evidence to strengthen your case.

You may be able to recover compensation through your own uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. This part of your auto policy is designed to protect you when the at-fault driver cannot fully compensate for your losses.

Connecticut follows a modified comparative negligence rule. You can recover compensation as long as you are not more than 50% at fault, and your compensation is reduced by your percentage of fault. For example, if you are found 20% responsible, your recovery would be reduced by 20%. Determining this percentage is often contested, which is why having a strong legal advocate on your side matters.

You may be able to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, reduced earning capacity, property damage, and pain and suffering. In serious cases, damages may also include long-term medical needs, disability, or loss of enjoyment of life.

Your attorney will investigate the crash, gather evidence, document your injuries, and calculate the full value of your losses. They’ll handle communication with insurers, negotiate for a fair settlement, and, if necessary, file a lawsuit and prepare your case for trial. Our team at KJSR keeps you informed and ensures every deadline is met, so you can focus on recovery.
