Winter weather causes collisions across Connecticut

Friday March 8, 2013

Yesterday morning, winter weather blew through Connecticut, bringing a string of serious car accidents with it. Unfortunately, there is only so much you can do when inclement weather strikes. However, drivers have a responsibility to operate their vehicles in a manner that is appropriate for the current road conditions. In a situation like this, that would likely entail slowing down, making sure your headlights are on and maintaining a safe distance from the car in front of you. If drivers fail to drive safely and cause a collision, it may be cause for a personal injury claim.

According to a recent Associate Press report published in the CT Post, there were dozens of car accidents throughout the state yesterday morning. The biggest and potentially the most damaging crash took place in Tolland and involved three tractor-trailers and nine other cars. A police officer said the crash was triggered by a FedEx tractor-trailer that tipped over on Interstate 84. The accident shut down eastbound lanes for several hours.

Police reported several other truck accidents as well as car accidents that resulted in road closures throughout the state.

We get our fair share of winter weather in Connecticut, so many of us are used to driving in conditions like we’ve had recently. However, snow, ice and strong winds make it difficult for even the most experienced drivers to get around safely. With a winter storm warning in effect throughout most of Connecticut for much of the afternoon — and up to a foot of snow on the way — drivers should continue to put safety first if they must drive.
