Were you injured by a driver who was texting?

Saturday February 21, 2015

In our last post, we discussed the importance of parents sending the right message to teens about texting while driving.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than nine people die and more than a thousand are injured in accidents involving a distracted driver every day in the United States, CNN reported.

With society’s newfound obsession with smartphones, texting and talking are two of the biggest causes of distractions for drivers.

There are currently 44 states that have made it illegal to text and drive — including Connecticut, which has also banned talking on a handheld device while driving — but the accidents continue to occur.

It’s no surprise that texting while driving leads to accidents as a study by Carnegie Mellon University revealed that using a cellphone takes close to 40 percent of brain activity away from driving.

Additionally, research from Virginia Tech Transportation Institute has showed that texting while driving is comparable to driving the length of a football field at 55 mph without looking at the road.

When accident victims believe that they were injured by a driver who was distracted by a cellphone, it’s important to talk to a personal injury lawyer who can make sure they get the compensation they deserve.

Insurance companies may still attempt to offer a low ball settlement in these cases, but an experienced personal injury lawyer will demand a fair outcome for his or her client.
