New Haven children become car accident victims outside their home

Saturday July 20, 2013

Motorists need to use extra caution when driving on residential streets, but it is equally important for pedestrians to look both ways before crossing the road. Two sisters were hurt recently when they darted across the street toward their New Haven home on a recent Monday afternoon and were struck by an oncoming Jeep. The car accident victims were taken to a local hospital with unspecified but non-critical injuries. The driver of the Jeep was also transported to the hospital.

The 5-year-old and 12-year-old siblings, along with their brother, were at their grandmother’s house just before the accident occurred. They saw their father arrive at their home across the street, and the youngest girl ran into the road. Her sister followed after her, and both were struck. They were not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

According to the local alderman, the road where the accident occurred has posed traffic dangers for some time. Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the cause. The Jeep was taken in for inspection by the police.

It remains to be seen whether the driver of the Jeep will be found liable for the accident. If so, it may help the car accident victims and their families make their case, should they decide to file a personal injury claim against the driver. It is likely that the hospital transport and treatment for the girls’ injuries will result in costly medical bills that this New Haven family may struggle to pay. Successfully litigating a personal injury claim may alleviate them of this financial burden and allow them to focus on helping the girls recover physically and emotionally from the accident.
