DUI accidents pose a serious risk to road users in Connecticut as well as throughout the country. Driving a vehicle while intoxicated is a reckless and negligent act that shows a complete disregard for the safety of other road users. The reckless and negligent choice to drive a motor vehicle while under the influence means that in the event of an accident, the negligent party can be held liable for any damages that resulted.
A Connecticut man died after being hit by an SUV while riding his motorcycle on a local road one night. According to reports, police have identified the victim as a 56-year-old man. Police said a 34-year-old woman was riding the motorcycle that hit the man.
The 34-year-old woman was not injured in the motor vehicle accident. The man was taken to a local hospital where he died from injuries inflicted in the crash.
Motorcycle accidents are infamous for causing much more traumatic injuries than car-to-car accidents usually do. A motorcycle accident victim, like a pedestrian or bicyclist who is injured, does not have the benefit of the steel exterior of an automobile to protect him or her in case of a crash. Speed may compound the problem when a motorcycle driver is thrown to the ground or thrown through the air in a crash with a car, truck or bus.
Police said the woman who drove the motorcycle was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and following too close.
Victims injured in accidents involving drunk drivers may be able to bring an action to collect damages for their injuries. To be successful in such an action, victims must prove certain things against the defendant. A victim, or one’s family if one is killed, must show that the defendant’s intoxication level was too high to safely operate a vehicle and that he or she failed to apply proper care in his or her actions for the safety of others. Confirming all the relevant facts of the accident surrounding the consumption of alcohol helps attorneys ensure clients get full and fair compensation for their losses.
