Connecticut cops spend holiday cracking down on dangerous drivers

Wednesday December 3, 2014

While many Connecticut residents spent the Thanksgiving holiday eating, spending time with family, shopping and watching sports, the state police were busy cracking down on dangerous drivers.

In effort to keep the roads safe during one of the busiest travel times of the year, the Connecticut State Police stepped up enforcement measures from early Tuesday to Sunday night. The goal was to target drunk drivers and aggressive drivers.

According to an initial report, the state police arrested 25 people for drunk driving and issued close to 2,600 citations for hazardous moving violations such as cellphone use or tailgating. They also issued nearly 900 speeding tickets and 300 seatbelt violations to Connecticut drivers during the crackdown.

Even with the state police working overtime during the holiday weekend accidents were still common. State police said they responded to at least 665 car crashes over the long holiday weekend.

It was reported that one of the weekend’s accidents was fatal and 88 of the accidents involved injuries. The fatality appears to have been the result of a single-vehicle accident in Norwalk that police are still investigating.

At this point, it has not been reported how many of the holiday weekend’s accidents were related to law violations such as impaired driving or distracted driving.
