Drunk or drugged driving is a serious offense in Connecticut that can result in criminal and civil liabilities. Many New Haven drivers know that drunk driving increases the likelihood of an accident because alcohol affects a driver’s focus and reaction time to a precarious road situation.
A 44-year-old man is now facing a driving under the influence charge after allegedly causing a three-vehicle crash north of New Haven. Prior to the crash, a witness observed that the man’s car was traveling erratically. According to police, the alleged drunk driver turned left and hit the side of a minivan traveling in the opposite lane. The impact caused the minivan to land on its side, injuring the driver and two passengers who were children. They were taken to local hospitals and fire officials said that the victims’ injuries did not appear life threatening.
A third vehicle sustained front-end damage. Its driver was also taken to a hospital in an unknown condition.
The first driver was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. A crash investigation is underway and police are asking witnesses to come forward.
Impaired driving is a reckless act that can have negative implications to both the driver and any victims. Alcohol is one of the major causes of a car accident across the country. Injuries sustained in a car collision can be serious or even deadly. Aside from pain and suffering, car accident injuries come with substantial costs, including hospital bills, missed workdays, funeral expenses and other damages.
Fortunately, if negligence of the driver can be proven, victims can seek compensation. A personal injury lawsuit filed with the help of New Haven attorney can help. Or if a victim dies, the victim’s family may wish to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
