Summer driving can pose many risks

Tuesday June 18, 2019

The summer months are likely times in which many Connecticut drivers feel most at ease on the roads. With no ice or snow and the ability to drive carefree with the windows rolled down, summer driving may be something you even look forward to.

However, car accidents can spike in summer months due to a wide array of reasons. Drivers can benefit from learning about potential hazards for the coming months and how to do their part to combat such dangers.

Contributing factors to the dangers of summer driving

Holidays like Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day and Labor Day weekend can be some of the most dangerous times. For Memorial Day weekend alone in 2019, the National Safety Council projected 380 road fatalities.

Contributing factors to summer accidents include:

  • More congested roads. With holidays and long weekends, more cars on the roads can lead to more impatient, impaired or distracted drivers.
  • Longer driving hours. With many taking time off for vacations, this can lead to longer driving hours and an increased risk of drowsy or fatigued driving.
  • Construction. Summer is a notorious time for road construction, which can cause hazards for drivers who fail to slow down or abide by warning signs.
  • Increased teen drivers on the roads. With school out for the summer, more teens are out on the roads, increasing the risks of distracted drivers.

Other risks can include sudden severe weather, increased cyclists and pedestrians sharing the roads with motor vehicles, ignored maintenance issues and more.

Staying safe during the summer months

To combat these hazards, keep in mind a few simple safety tips. First, get your car serviced, especially before long road trips. Hot weather can threaten your tires and failing to address key maintenance issues before a trip across Connecticut can lead to frustration and dangers on the roads.

Additionally, practice defensive driving. Exercise extra caution on weekends and holidays, especially at night. Avoid distractions, plan for a designated driver if necessary and get a good night’s rest. If you have teen drivers, discuss the dangers of distracted driving and the need to remain alert at all times while behind the wheel.

Car accidents can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. However, being aware of summer hazards and driving responsibly can enhance the safety of yourself, your family and the vehicles around you.
