What are the lasting effects of a workplace injury?

Wednesday March 20, 2019

After a workplace injury in Connecticut, you may focus mainly on getting better and healing in the short term. The workers’ compensation system also has this focus. There is not a lot of thought that goes into long-term effects of an injury beyond the physical healing. However, you may experience long-term effects even after you have healed physically and can return to work.

According to the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America, you may suffer from physical pain or have emotional and financial issues long after you are considered healed from a workplace injury. This can take a huge toll on your family and your life.

If you have strained finances, it could increases issues in your marriage and cause lasting effects on the relationship. This is actually common since workers’ compensation only pays you two-thirds of your wages when you are off work healing. This can lead to stress and emotional problems. You could suffer from mental health issues as a result.

It can even affect your relationships at work. This can cause stress or problems in the workplace once you are healed and back on the job.

It is not often thought about how a workplace injury can affect more than your body. You can suffer far more than the initial injury. These other issues can far outlast the injury. However, the system is equipped to focus only on the main issue and does not address these other things. This is something that is not always easy to deal with.

You may find you can get some compensation to assist with secondary issues, such as mental health or lasting physical pain, but when it comes to relationships and emotional issues, you will have to find a way to work through them. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
