A Shocking Distracted Driving Trend: Taking Videos While Driving

Thursday July 27, 2017

Distracted driving is an epidemic that keeps growing. Talking on a phone or texting while driving are behaviors that many people engage in while driving. However, one new distracted driving trend is particularly dangerous: Taking videos or live streaming while driving.

Live Streaming While Driving Causes Teen Death

In a recent case, a teen driver from California was live streaming on Instagram while driving. She had also been drinking.

At one point, the driver lost control of the car after overcorrecting a turn. The car went through a wire fence and overturned.

The driver’s 14-year-old sister was ejected from the car and died. Another 14-year-old passenger suffered major injuries.

Shockingly, the driver did not stop live streaming after the accident. She proceeded to locate her sister in a field and continued filming her body after she had died. She later uploaded the video to Facebook. (The video has since been deleted on both Instagram and Facebook.)

Ending the Epidemic

As technology advances, people are finding more and more ways to engage in distracted driving – whether that involves taking videos or selfies, live streaming, or engaging in other risky driving behaviors. Unfortunately, this puts all drivers at risk.

It is the responsibility of each driver to eliminate distractions while driving. This is the only way to end the epidemic.

We all play a major role in keeping our roadways safe.
