How to recognize signs of a birth injury

Thursday August 4, 2016

One of the worst fears of new parents is the possibility of their child suffering a birth injury. The results can be catastrophic and change the course of a life when a doctor or other medical provider makes a mistake during pregnancy or childbirth.

Unfortunately for parents, it is not always easy to recognize signs of a birth injury. Oftentimes, hospitals are slow to offer answers when parents suspect something is wrong. Parents are left wondering what has happened with little help from the doctors they trusted.

There are many different types of birth injuries (including cerebral palsy, shoulder dystocia, brain injuries, brachial plexus injuries, and more). While every birth injury is different and each baby will respond differently, there are some signs to look for that may indicate that something is wrong:

  • Lack of muscle control
  • A limp arm
  • Inability to focus eyes
  • Bruises and swelling of the baby’s face or shoulders
  • Distorted facial features
  • Seizures
  • Excessive crying

This is not an exhaustive list of symptoms. A mother’s instinct and a father’s instinct are powerful. If you suspect that something is wrong, it is important to take steps to protect your child.

Developmental delays can also indicate a birth injury. However, developmental delays may not be apparent until months or years after a child is born. Parents should still consult a trusted doctor and attorney if they suspect something is wrong.
