Connecticut attorney general wants malpractice lawsuit dismissed

The estate of a woman who was killed by her mentally ill son has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the state of Connecticut. The woman was stabbed to death the day after Christmas in 2013. Her son was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the woman's murder.

What is a never event?

Never event is the phrase used in health care settings to refer to events that just aren't supposed to happen. These are preventable accidents or occurrences that hospital staff work to avoid because they are dangerous for patients or staff, and they can increase the cost of healthcare. In an ideal situation, never events would not occur; in reality, staff try to keep them at a minimal level.

$10.1 million malpractice award for mother and son

About five years ago, an 11-month-old boy contracted bacterial meningitis. Two days in a row, his mother took him to the emergency room in Connecticut's neighboring state of Pennsylvania, but he was given a diagnosis of an upper respiratory infection. The child didn't get much in the line of treatment.
