On Tuesday, across the country and throughout the New Haven area, residents of both Irish and non-Irish heritage will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. For many, the day is traditionally commemorated with Irish music and food as well as one or more green alcoholic beverages.

Since 2009, across the United States a total of 276 people were killed in drunk driving-related motor vehicle accidents. Many more were likely injured in car accidents after St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in which alcohol played a factor. For individuals who plan to partake in St. Patrick’s Day festivities, it’s wise to plan ahead and make arrangements for a sober drive home. Whether a sober friend or a taxi, prior to leaving one’s home it’s important to plan to ensure one arrives safely home. In cases where a friend agrees to provide a sober ride home, it’s important that he or she pledges not to drink any alcohol.

Through its national traffic safety campaign, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving; the National Transportation Safety Administration aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. While the vast majority of U.S. drivers agree that drinking and driving is dangerous, many fail to understand that having any amount of alcohol can inhibit a driver’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
