A man has filed a $25 million lawsuit against St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The lawsuit claims hospital negligence after the man alleges that he was sexually assaulted by a nursing assistant.
According to reports, the nursing assistant has confessed to sodomizing and fondling three male patients while he worked at the hospital in 2013 and 2014. He has since been arrested and charged with sexual assault. There is also another possible victim and that part of the case is still under investigation.
The plaintiff, who has been listed as John Doe in court records, was in the hospital in June 2014. This is when the man alleges that the sexual assault occurred. He stated in court paperwork that he awoke to find the nursing assistance fondling him, with his hand down the man’s shorts. As soon as the nursing assistant realized the man had awoken, he said, “Good morning,” and left the man’s room. The man told his spouse, who contacted security at the hospital. The nursing assistant left the hospital after the incident, stating that he had a bad headache.
The man was surprised to learn that he was not the only person the employee had allegedly assaulted. The hospital has denied any negligence on its part and has said the nursing assistant has since been fired.
This type of case is not without precedence. In 2012, a woman in California was awarded $65 million after she alleged that a male nursing assistant had sexually abused her.
This case of possible hospital negligence will be heard in the state’s supreme court unless there is a settlement first. Those who believe they have been the victims of hospital negligence have a right to pursue compensation, even if there have been no criminal charges in relation to the case.
