Pickup keeps driving after striking three pedestrians

Thursday June 5, 2014

A Connecticut man is being called a hero after he used his van to cut off another driver who had run over three pedestrians and was dragging them along as he continued to drive.

The dramatic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Newington when three residents of New Britain, ages 23, 43 and 18, were crossing a road on foot. According to reports, a pickup truck, seeming to appear out of nowhere, struck the three people but kept driving.

Another New Britain resident witnessed the accident and realized that the pickup driver had no intention of stopping. Quickly, the witness cut across the road and used his own vehicle to stop the pickup in its path.

The witness said the pickup had dragged the three pedestrians about 50 feet before finally coming to a stop. The witness added that the driver of the pickup tried to get away, but the witness kept him at the scene until police arrived.

Not only did the witness intervene and possibly save the lives of the three pedestrians, who remarkably suffered only non-life threatening injuries, he also said he plans on holding a fundraiser to help support the accident victims.

Undoubtedly, the 32-year-old driver of the pickup truck could face criminal charges for his role in the accident. However, he could also face liability in a personal injury lawsuit for running down the pedestrians.

Personal injury claims not only compensate accident victims for the monetary and non-monetary damages they sustained, they can also hold individuals responsible for their negligent or criminal behavior.
