What to do after a car accident in Connecticut (1 of 2)

We have all been driving down the road and seen damaged vehicles on the shoulder with distraught drivers standing nearby. However, the truth is that many of us have no idea what to do or what not to do in this situation.

Additionally, after being involved in a car accident, most people feel a rush of adrenalin or tenseness that can make it difficult to think clearly. But the right steps need to be taken in order to protect your interests for when the insurance companies get involved.

Here are a several steps to take -- and a few things to avoid doing -- following a car accident in Connecticut:

Call the police right away.

It's important to report the accident as soon as possible and remain in a safe place while waiting for them to arrive. It's best not move your cars unless you have been given instructions by dispatchers to do so or if the cars are an unsafe place.

Be careful of what you say to the other driver.

Following a car accident, most drivers will step out of their vehicles to assess the damage and talk to the other driver. However, it's important not to make statements about whether you think you were at fault for the accident.

Listen carefully to the other driver's account of the accident.

Even though you will be careful not to admit fault, it's possible that the other driver will want to talk about how the accident occurred. If so, it's important to listen carefully and take notes, if possible.
