Man to get prison time after fatal car accident in Connecticut

Halloween is generally a fun holiday for most people. Small children dress up like their favorite characters, while adults use it as a time for parties to socialize with their friends. The vast majority of people have positive memories associated with the day. Unfortunately for a community in Connecticut, the day will now likely be linked to a fatal car accident that killed one and injured three. The driver in the accident recently pleaded guilty to several charges stemming from the accident.

The accident occurred after a group of friends left a Halloween party in 2012. The group was divided among two separate cars, one driven by a 20-year-old male. According to reports, the two cars began racing one another. The male driver lost control of his vehicle before ramming a utility pole and cement wall.

A 19-year-old passenger in the car died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. The driver and two other occupants were injured. Police claim the driver’s blood alcohol content was well over the legal limit and that he tested positive for several illegal drugs. He was charged with manslaughter and assault. He pleaded guilty in a recent deal and is expected to be sentenced to 10 years in prison; however, it may be suspended after six years.

Even though it appears that the criminal case against the driver is winding down, reports indicate that at least two of the occupants have filed a civil suit in a Connecticut court as a result of the fatal car accident. If the family of the deceased passenger and the victims that survived can prove that the driver’s negligence caused the accident — a claim seemingly supported by his recent guilty plea — they could receive a monetary award as reimbursement for any financial losses. Such an award could help with the financial ramifications of the accident such as funeral expenses, medical bills, lost wages other damages recognized under Connecticut law.
