Texting while driving: an increasing problem for New Haven

Just recently the cell phone celebrated its 40^th anniversary since the first mobile phone call was made back in 1973. The phone weighed 2.5 pounds and was extremely big and cumbersome in comparison to today’s cell phones. Back then there was no such thing as texting and driving but in today’s society it is alarming at how many people, including New Haven residents, use their cell phone while driving.

Drivers that choose to text at the wheel are 23 times more likely to get in a car accident than other drivers. With such a high risk of an accident, one would think many people would avoid texting while driving but they don’t. For the most part our society blames texting and driving on teens but studies have shown that nearly 50 percent of adults are guilty this behavior. Regardless of age, texting is still an increasing problem in America.
