Post-blizzard safe driving tips from AAA

Connecticut residents are in the midst of what could be the most significant blizzard in recent history. Areas in the eastern part of the state have already seen more than 20 inches of snow, and the flakes are still falling.

As a result of the epic snowstorm officials imposed a travel ban for the entirety of the state, but the ban was lifted at 2 p.m. However, just because the travel ban has been lifted doesn’t necessarily mean that the roads are in good condition.

For that reason, AAA has released some tips for safe driving after the storm.

  • Clear any snow and ice away from your vehicle’s exhaust pipe, which could cause a deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak when the engine is running.
  • Clear snow and ice from the rest of your vehicle, which is required by law.
  • Watch out for closed roads and avoid them.
  • When possible, take major roadways that have already been cleared of snow and salted.
  • Try to avoid passing plows, which can lead to accidents.
  • Give yourself more space between your car and the car ahead of you in case the roads are slippery.
  • Apply the gas and brakes slowly as traction can take longer on snow- and ice-covered roads.
  • Avoid using cruise control, which can cause you to lose control of your vehicle in snow and ice.

If an accident does occur or you have problems with your vehicle, pull over to the side of the roadway and turn on your hazard lights.

Remain inside of your vehicle and call for assistance. If you are afraid your vehicle could be hit, wait outside of it in a safe place.

Additionally, AAA recommends traveling with the following items in case you become stalled or trapped in your vehicle:

  • Jumper cables
  • Reflective vest
  • Blankets
  • Shovel
