Man charged after fatal car accident in Connecticut

The dangers of distracted driving are becoming more and more apparent. As people become more aware of the dangers associated with texting while driving, for example, laws are being enacted that prohibit such behavior in order to protect the safety of others on the road. When distracted driving is combined with driving under the influence of drugs, the chances of causing a serious accident are likely even higher. One Connecticut man now faces several charges after police claim he caused a fatal car accident.

The accident occurred in late August. Police claim that a 21-year-old man crossed the center line before striking a sports utility vehicle traveling in the opposite direction head-on. An 83-year-old woman in the SUV died as a result of the collision. A second woman was seriously injured, and two other passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police suspect that the driver of the first vehicle was under the influence of several drugs and either texting or talking on his cell phone at the time of the accident. As a result, he now faces manslaughter charges. He is expected back in court at the beginning of the new year.

An unexpected death such as this often has consequences that extend beyond the emotional impact. Family members may find themselves burdened with the unexpected financial ramifications of such an accident. However, they do have the option of filing a wrongful death case in a Connecticut civil court. If they can prove that the man's negligence caused the fatal car accident, the court could award damages to cover related expenses such as funeral costs, lost wages and other financial relief recognized by our laws.
