Heart & Hypertension Claims for Police & Firefighters

Workers' Compensation Claims for Police and Firefighters

Heart Disease and Hypertension Claims

As with workers' compensation claims by private employees, police officers and firefighters claiming workers' compensation must usually be able to prove that the injury occurred while on duty.

However, Connecticut has a special workers' compensation law for police officers and firefighters who develop heart disease or hypertension (high blood pressure).

For police officers and firefighters who began employment before 1996 and were cleared for duty in a pre-employment physical, the workers' compensation law states that a police officer or firefighter who develops heart disease or hypertension is automatically entitled to workers' compensation benefits, on the assumption that the stress of the job caused the illness. The law requires the firefighter or police officer to give written notice to the employer within one year of having symptoms or being diagnosed with heart disease or hypertension.
